Over time, the series has evolved amidst the Cold War, futuristic world and outer space.Some additional and portable games are made by other developers. The newest title, Call of Duty: Vanguard is releasing on November 5, 2021.
Initially, the series
focused on World War II situations, with Infinity Ward developing the first
(2003) and second (2005) titles in the series, and Treyarch developing the
third (2006). Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) introduced a modern new
setting and proved to be the groundbreaking title for the series, creating the
sub-series Modern Warfare. The game's legacy also influenced the creation of a
remastered version which was released in 2016.
As of April 2021, the series has sold over 400 million copies.[1] Meanwhile, the games in the series are released annually until blockbuster sales, the series is confirmed by Guinness World Records as the best-selling first-person shooter series. It is also the highest-grossing video game franchise created in the United States and the fourth highest-grossing video game franchise of all time. Other products from the franchise include a line of action figures designed by Plan B Toys, decks of cards from the Upper Deck Company, Mega Blocks from Mega Brands, and a comic book mini-series published by WildStorm Productions.
